Hug Point State Recreation Site Guide
Hug Point: Where History and Coastal Beauty Collide Guide
Escape the crowds and discover a hidden gem just south of Cannon Beach: Hug Point State Recreation Site. This stunning location offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it a must-see for any visitor to the Oregon Coast. Imagine walking along a sandy beach, surrounded by towering cliffs and the rhythmic crash of waves – Hug Point delivers this and so much more. The name "Hug Point" comes from its history as a stagecoach route. Before the highway was built, travelers had to "hug" the point at low tide to continue their journey south. You can still see the remnants of this old road carved into the rock face, a tangible reminder of a bygone era. The area was also used for early logging operations, with logs being floated down to the beach for transport. Today, Hug Point offers a variety of activities for visitors. Explore the sea caves (at low tide only!), hike to a seasonal waterfall cascading onto the beach, or simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking views. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including seabirds, seals, and even the occasional whale. Remember to check the tide charts before you go, as some areas are only accessible during low tide. While there aren't specific culinary traditions tied directly to Hug Point, Cannon Beach offers a plethora of seafood restaurants where you can savor the flavors of the Pacific Northwest after your adventure.
